Brighton Fashion Week

by Rosie Crompton on May 8, 2013

We’ve been dutifully reporting on the trends seen at the fashion weeks in London, Paris, New York and Milan, but now it’s our hometown’s turn to send its latest fashionable creations down the catwalk. In previous years, Brighton Fashion Week has successfully put Brighton firmly on the fashion radar, and this year promises to come back bigger and better than ever with a spectacular line up of shows showcasing the city’s emerging talent in fashion. In a city famous for its eccentricity and artistic flair, Brighton Fashion Week prides itself on pushing the boundaries of fashion and design in a extravagant spectacle.

BFW13 kicks off on Thursday 13th June with an extravaganza of exciting and innovative high end fashion in the ‘Zeitgeist’ show, celebrating everything from refined ready-to-wear collections to the weird and wonderful avant-garde. Jewellery brand Belles Bejewelled, couture knitwear designer Katie Jones and Korean menswear designer Hyung Tae Kim will be showcasing their latest collections, whilst the show will be headlined by Jess Eaton, who returns to BFW after she brought the crowd to their feet in 2011 with her triumphant ‘Roadkill Couture’ collection. This year, Eaton will be unveiling her latest collection, AIR, in which her distinctive gothic eveningwear will be crafted from recycled parachutes and adorned with dramatic wings and feathers.

Friday night will debut a new venture to the line up of Brighton Fashion Week – the ‘Sustain’ catwalk show, dedicated to ethical, eco and sustainable fashion. The show will see collections from award-winning Central Saint Martins graduate, Liora Lassalle, alongside up and coming eco fashion designers such as Anna Bykova and Brandy Nicole Easter. Rebecca Jayne Taylor, who designed the up-cycled Speedo Unity Dress alongside sustainable fashion brand ‘From Somewhere’, will also be showcasing her latest ethical collection. With an exciting line up of talented and creative eco designers, the ‘Sustain’ show is bound to disprove any misconception that fashion cannot be both stylish and environmentally conscious.

Brighton Fashion Week’s grand finale will take place on Saturday 15th June, with an explosive, flamboyant display devoted to the art of costume design. The ‘ShowReel’ catwalk show acts as a playground for the imaginations of the talented costume designers on the BFW roster, and will showcase work from one of our favourite Brighton designers, Louise O’Mahoney. O’Mahoney’s work often draws inspiration from the fifties silhouette and a playful use of colour, combined with her creativity and imagination. ‘ShowReel’ will also feature collections from fantasy corsetieres Curve Couture and New York based art wear designer Uta Bekaia.

All three of the catwalk shows will be held in St Bartholomew’s Chruch, and tickets are available from www.brightonfashionweek.com.

During Brighton Fashion Week, other events will be taking place throughout the city. Look out for the Health and Wellbeing Zone in Jubilee Square on People’s Day (Saturday 15th), and a High Street Fashion Show focusing on summer trends, in Churchill Square Shopping Centre on Sunday.
