Stylish Spring Jackets

by Rosie Crompton on May 3, 2013

After what feels to be like the longest winter ever known to humanity, I think it’s just about safe to say it – Spring has finally sprung. Hurrah! But hold your horses –  it’s not time to start baring your shoulders in that strappy sundress quite yet, as the good old unpredictable British weather is bound to leave you a sodden, shivering wreck the moment you step outside. But just because Mother Nature isn’t cooperating with your new crop top that simply needs an outing, doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice on style or else risk hypothermia.  Spring’s latest offerings of lightweight cover ups are hot, and will beat the Spring chill too.

For me, as soon as the sun makes an appearance- so does my denim jacket. A spring/summer staple every year, but this season a denim jacket works harmoniously with the Country ‘n’ Western chic that’s all over the High Street. The ideal companion to the tasselling, feathering and fringing of the Navajo style, a denim jacket thrown over a day dress with a pair of cowboy boots and a fringed bag equals laid-back cowgirl chic perfection. But if you’re more of a jeans kinda gal, you may be tempted to swerve the denim jacket. Nonsense – double denim is back. I promise: Rihanna’s doing it!

When a denim jacket just won’t cut the mustard, it’s time to call upon a trusty blazer. Oh yes, the old fail-safe will see you through any occasion, whether dressing up a pair of jeans or over your favourite party dress. But step away from the boring black jacket: this season’s blazers are a spectrum of colour and whirlwind of prints. If they’re not pretty pastels, they’re dangerously bright or adorned in the prints of the season- florals, geometrics or stripes. And if you must insist on loyalty to black, mix in some white and embrace the monochrome trend.

The jacket of the season, introduced to SS13 by the likes of Antipodium, Stella McCartney and Mulberry, is the new and improved bomber jacket. Having undergone a serious makeover, the bomber jacket has shed its military roots in favour of a softer (yet still edgy) feminine look. Whether done in casual, sports luxe (a la Chloé and Ms McCartney) or ultra girly styles showcasing sugar-sweet pastels and enchanting prints, the re-imagined bomber has been crafted of every fabric imaginable; from leather and lace, to silk and chiffon. Choose a lightweight bomber to see you through from those chilly Spring days to the summer days once the sun goes down.

So what will you choose? We’ve picked some of our favourites to help you decide…
